Where do you go in times of trouble or dark times?

Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you;
    do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 43:1-3a “But now, this is what the Lord says—
    he who created you, Jacob,
    he who formed you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
    I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
    I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
    they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
    you will not be burned;
    the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the Lord your God…”

David faced uncertainty with confidence by living in step with God’s Word.
Psalm 119:11, 86-105, 114

  • Saturating in the Word of God will keep you from sinning. (11)

  • You can trust in his commands. (86)

  • His Word is eternal and stands firm both in Heaven and on earth. (89)

“The Word is part of my interface with heaven.” Greg Heisey

  • His precepts help you survive affliction/pressure and preserves your life. (92-93)

“[The Word] is an anchor for me.  It never changes…I have found great comfort in it in some of the darkest hours of my life.” Gene Dugger

  • Unfairly targeted? Ponder his statutes. (95)

  • Love his law and meditate on it. (97)

  • His commands will make you wise. (98)

  • Meditating on His Word will give your insight greater than the teachers. (99)

  • Obedience to His Word will give you understanding. (100)

  • Once you have understanding from His Word, you will begin to despise sin. (104)

  • His Word will guide each step and give you direction for life. (105)

  • With the truth and trustworthiness of the Word we have hope. (114)

Living a life that pleases God is only possible by living under the authority of His Word.
2 Timothy 3:10-17

  • Continue living what you have learned and keep learning but from people you know and are proven to be good teachers and are living biblically. (14)

  • Begin teaching the Word to even the infant, for there, a wisdom will be found that will guide them to salvation. (15)

  • The Scriptures come from the very breath of God. (16a)

  • The Word is for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training each of us to live the life that God intends for his children. (16b)

  • The Word is the manual needed to equip us for all that God would ever ask us to do. (17)

Staying sound in your doctrine will require you being fully immersed in the truth of God’s Word.
2 Timothy 4:1-4

  • Preaching the Word prepares God’s family for all the seasons of life. (2)

  • Preaching the Word under account and not by opinion will be essential for God’s people to have sound doctrine in their understanding of God’s character and the depraved nature of mankind. (3)
    • Sound doctrine is maintained with accountability to Scriptural authority and with those who are pursuant to that end.
    • Sound doctrine is not determined by or rarely reflects societal norms.
    • Sound doctrine will not compartmentalize God as man might do with himself.
  • The Word of God often speaks hard truths that are difficult for believers to accept and to convey to a hardened world.

The Hardest Truth: Salvation found exclusively in Jesus Christ can only be good news if one understands that they are lost and condemned to eternal punishment.  We only know this to be true from God’s never changing fully reliable Word of Truth.

“Thy word I have hid in mine heart that I might not sin against thee.” Psalm 119:11 KJV

Prayer

Song

Benediction:  2 Peter 1:19-21We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”

“We need the Word. We really do.” Gordon Derstler

Series Information

Job 12:12 says “Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?”  With all that has happened in the past couple of years people are clamoring for perspective and clarity.  Life did not prepare them for such times.  However, God has given wisdom through his Spirit and Word and those who have lived longer can give us guidance in such times.  This series is receiving from such people and then going to the Word to gain greater understanding and clarity for how to go forward thriving in faith.
