Majestic Considerations

God is beyond…!  Psalm 8:1-2

  • He is Lord, and he is my Lord. (1a)
    • He is King, my King.
    • He is God, my God.
    • Acknowledge who he is and align yourself under that authority.
    • A mere earthly king encounters the Great King.
  • His name alone is majestic.
    • Majestic (def)- “mighty” a royal attribute denoting his victories, his might in judgment, his law, and his rule over creation. EBC
  • The heavens reveal his glory. (1b)
    • “glory” (def)- heavy in weight, weighty importance, splendor, a majestic present. HBD
    • This “glory” (hod) is this “obstacle” so magnificent and beyond you that you submit or yield to it rather than conquer or move it. Wikipedia
  • Praise of ones who yield to God will render ineffective those who reject God. (2)

Who am I…?  Psalm 8:3-8

  • The magnificent creator of the universe thinks about you. (3-4)
  • The magnificent creator of the universe cares about you.
    • How can you be sure of this?
    • How did David discern this?

Romans 1:20 “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

  • The humble truth that God gives glory to mankind. (5)
    • David’s dilemma: God is so great his glory (hod) is beyond, yet we receive glory (kavod) that is not of our making.

Genesis 1:26-27 “Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky , over the livestock and all the wild animals and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

  • Mankind while glorious, is the caretaker of the Glorious One. (6-8)
  • The Creator God considers man. Man must consider God.

God, my God, is glorious and majestic.  Psalm 8:9

Prayer

Song  “So Will I”

Benediction: God is mindful and caring—Jesus!  John 3:16

Discussion Guide:

  1. Have you ever had a moment out in nature where the glory and presence of God hit you profoundly? If so, share that experience.  What made it so significant?  What did it tell you about God in who he is and how did it make you feel as to who you are?
  2. In light of Romans 1:20, how does nature around us communicate that God knows us and cares for us?

How can you explain to someone in your oikos that Jesus is the manifestation of David’s claim in Psalm 8:4 that God is mindful of us and cares for us?
