Asking the right questions - Who are you?

Read John 4:4-10

Question 1: How can you ask me for a drink? (9)

  • Jesus is breaking social norms.
  • Motive is being explored.

Answer from Jesus: If you knew who I am you would ask for living water. (10)

Read John 4:11-13

Question 2: Where can you get you this living water?  (11)

  • She does not ask who he is.
  • She is curious about this living water.
  • She fails to accept Jesus’ invitation to ask who he is.

Question 3: Are you greater than Jacob? (12)

  • Wait a minute, are you claiming to be greater than Jacob also known as Israel!?!
  • She assumes a boastful claim. She still does not ask “who are you?”.

Answer from Jesus: “I will give you water that will remove thirst and lead to eternal life”. (13)

Read John 4:14-24

Question 4: You are clearly a prophet, where must we worship? (19)

  • These are her spiritual deliberations.
  • Two teachings of where to worship—which is true?
  • She assumes he is a prophet, yet she still does not ask who he is.

Her Conclusion: She stops asking and chooses to remain befuddled until the Messiah comes.

  • She was standing in front of Jesus who began with “if you knew who I am you would ask something different.”

Jesus answers what she did not ask:  I AM HE!

Encounter with Jesus.  John 4:39-42

  • Knowing who Jesus is can change your life!
  • A changed life gives opportunity to testify to others.
  • Your testimony will cause others to seek and discover who he is and believe.

Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah.  He has come to save the world.  This is the truth.  Our changed lives and testimony bear witness to that.  That is why we can say we worship him today in this house.  Where do we worship?  Wrong question.  Who do we worship?  We worship the savior of the world—Jesus.  And, this is his house where we will testify to the truth of who he is.   This is his house where people can come and have their lives changed and worship the one true God.  Amen and Amen!

Group Discussion Guide:

  1. When did you fully understand who Jesus is?
  2. How has Jesus shaped and changed your life?
  3. If someone in your oikos asked you “who is Jesus?” what would be your answer? How can you answer that question in a manner that would give someone the information needed to know that Jesus can change their life?  How would you invite someone to believe and receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior?

Series Information

John had a three years of observing Jesus and watching each human encounter with him reveal all the more who Jesus is.  Each person needs an encounter with Jesus, and it is our prayer that you will encounter Jesus anew in the weeks ahead.
