Sermon Notes and Discussion Guide

Luke 10:1-3 “After this the Lord appointed seventy-two[a] others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.”

“It’s not all about you.”

I have heard this many times:

  • As a redirection to my defensiveness.
  • Addressing my apprehension to accept an invitation to do something challenging.
  • Sometimes it is a wake-up statement to get me to look at the bigger picture.

Exodus 3:7-11

“Who am I that I should go…?” Moses struggled with the assignment he was being given from God.  (11)

  • Fear of going back. “My past gets in the way.”
  • Acceptance from his people?
  • Record of murder from the Egyptians?
  • It was a monumental task.  “Too big for me.”
  • I am not your guy or girl. “My skills are best used elsewhere.”
  • Personal identity crisis- was compromised due to rejection and dual raising.
  • Narrow view of role- Resolved himself to being just a shepherd.
  • Unimpressive resume- Raised in pharaoh’s house, ran from that, killed someone, and ran even farther.  Hanging out with sheep for 40 years.
  • Skill disqualification- having a speech impediment should not be a spokesman for God.

Exodus 3:12-22

“Suppose I go…”  Let’s talk this out.  Let me help you understand why I am not your guy. (13)

  • “Who is sending me?” (13-14)
  • God gives his name.  (14)
  • God gives his plan. (15-22)
  • God gives him the information to better understand.

Exodus 4:1-17 Moses pokes at the plan.

  • “What if they don’t believe me?” (1)
  • God gives him three miracles to perform. (2-9)
  • Staff to a snake.
  • Hand becomes leprous.
  • Water turning to blood.
  • God’s power will provide evidence for belief.

  • I don’t have the skillset for the role. MOSES gives his “I AM” statement. (10)
  • I have never been…
  • I am…
  • God leverages his design as creator of the tongue! (11)
  • God leverages his strength—I will help you speak. (12b)
  • God will teach you the words to say. (12b)
  • God ends the conversation.  GO—time to save a nation!!! (12a)

Jesus has told each of us to “go—it’s time to save the world.”

  • There is a harvest ready for the picking, and He asks you to pray for God to send people to harvest and He sends you.  Luke 10:2-3

  • For some it is simply to go and share with your oikos.

  • Others it might be to go and engage outside of your oikos.

  • There will be challenges for sure, but our own insecurities might be the first challenge.
  • What would be your “I am…?”

Set your mind on who God is and what He can do.  Luke 12:4-7, 11-12

  • Do not fear people, fear God.

  • Do not be afraid of God because He values you.

  • Like Moses…When you go, He will teach you in that very moment by His Holy Spirit what to say.

This could be your story.  Luke 10:16-24

  • When you speak, it’s not you they listen to or reject… it’s about Jesus! (16)

  • He gives you authority when you go where He sends you. (19)

  • Rejoice in the fruit Jesus has brought about and the future hope you have. (20)

  • You will experience the blessing of seeing and hearing things that people of long ago only dreamed of. (23-24)

Believers: Go!  Place your confidence in who God is and what He can do.  It’s not about you, but about others who need Him too.

Unbelievers: We have all been recipients of someone sharing Jesus with us.  We are grateful for it.  Don’t underestimate the challenge they may have had in sharing with you.   You might even be here at the invitation of someone.  Perhaps, your “I am” statement keeps you from coming to Jesus.

Benediction: Moses’ priestly blessing for a “going” nation.

Numbers 6:24-26 “The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; 26 the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”
