Read 1 John 2:1-6

“To know” ginoskw - (23x in 1 John) completely, intimately, a mastery—like yada in Hebrew.
Example: Husband and wife becoming one.

Truth: Knowing Jesus fully comes through obedience. (3)

  • This is directly tied to the Great Commission to teach all that He commanded us. Matthew 28:19-20

  • Coming under the lordship of Christ is when you begin to truly know him intimately.

Lie exposed: It is not possible to fully know Jesus IF we don’t keep His commands. (4)

  • You are staying on the periphery of Him not with Him.
    • Story: 17 years old and finally getting it.
  • Experiencing the “Why?” behind the commands is essential to knowing Jesus’ heart.

  • To obey some of His commands is to maintain you as Lord of your life.

  • Who is on the throne of your life?

  • Slave to sin or slave to Jesus? (Paul)

  • He needs to be LORD in your life.

Truth Experienced: IF we obey His Word both written and living our love for Him will grow towards completion. (5)

  • He is the Word both written and living. John 1:1-5

  • He gives us the Holy Spirit to help us in this journey of obedience. John 14:15-17
    • The journey of loving Jesus is why Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit.
    • The Holy Spirit will guide you to what is true.
    • He knows You. He knows Jesus and the Father and will reveal them to you.
  • This relationship is about experiencing the love of God.

Truth summarized: Living in Jesus is to live Jesus. (6)

  • This is where fellowship with Jesus thrives.

  • Jesus’ vision is to participate in the freedom of relationship He has with the Father. John 17:24-26
    • Be Where He is.
    • See His glory found in God’s love.
    • To know Him who knows the Father.
    • God’s love to be in us because He is in us.
  • Jesus is the exclusive path to knowing God. John 14:6

Take aways:

  1. God loves you and wants you to truly know Him and fellowship with Him.

  2. Until you give the reigns of your life over to Jesus you will not fully know Him.

  3. Jesus’ life is the master template for how to live. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life!

  4. Love for God will increase as we experience the truth of Jesus.

Series Information

The Apostle John writes these letters to the church from a shepherd’s heart caring the sheep.  Many trials will come to test us and discrouge us and even cause confusion.  The letters of John are to give us assurance that Christ is sufficient and that we can stand there.  This will give us confidence to stand in the truth in the face of testing and trials.
